蛇（へび）　Snakes

　人ひとによって好すき嫌きらいがはっきりする生いきものに蛇へびがいます。

　蛇へびは、足あしや手てがないうえに、にょろにょろと動うごいたり、とぐろを巻まいたりします。

　その様子ようすを見みて気持きもち悪わるいという思おもう人ひとがいます。

　また、毒どくをもつ蛇へびも多おおく、かまれると死しんでしまうこともありますので、こわいと思おもう人ひとがいます。

　最近さいきんは、蛇へびをペットとして飼かう人ひとも増ふえてきています。

　しかし、中なかには、大おおきくなると、10メートル以上いじょうになる蛇へびもいます。

　時々ときどき、蛇へびが逃にげ出だして大おおさわぎになることもあります。

　ペットとして飼かうなら、きちんと面倒めんどうをみてほしいです。

　昔むかしの人ひとは、蛇へびをどのように思おもっていたのでしょうか。蛇へびは、世界的せかいてきに、｢神かみのつかい｣や「縁起えんぎのよい生いきもの」として考かんがえられてきました。

　理由りゆうはいくつかあります。

　１ひとつめは、蛇へびは、野山のやまに住すみ、人間にんげんが育そだてた米こめや麦むぎを食たべるねずみなどの害獣がいじゅうを食たべます。それゆえ、蛇へびは、人間にんげんにとってとても役やくに立たつ生いきものと思おもわれてきました。

　２ふたつめは、蛇へびは脱皮だっぴをします。脱皮だっぴをしている様子ようすは、まるで、生うまれ変かわっているように見みえます。それゆえ、蛇へびは、永遠えいえんの命いのちを表あらわす生いきものとして考かんがえられてきました。

Snakes

　Snakes are one of those creatures that people have different likes and dislikes for.

　Snakes have no legs or hands, and they move in a wriggling or coiled manner.

　Some people find their appearance disgusting.

　Many snakes are also poisonous, and their bites can kill people, making them frightening to some people.

　Recently, more and more people are keeping snakes as pets.

　However, some snakes can grow to over 10 meters in length.

　Sometimes, snakes escape and cause a big commotion.

　If you are going to keep a snake as a pet, you should take good care of it.

　What did people in the past think of snakes? Snakes have been considered “messengers of the gods” and “auspicious creatures” throughout the world.

　There are several reasons.

　First, snakes live in the fields and mountains and eat vermin such as rats that eat rice and wheat grown by humans. Therefore, snakes have been considered very useful to humans.

　Second, snakes molt. When a snake molts, it looks as if it is being reborn. Therefore, the snake has been thought of as a creature that represents eternal life.
